The Crisis Text Line is a free and confidential service that connects people in crisis with trained Crisis Counselors. The texting service works to de-escalate crises through information, referral, and emotional support. It also alerts emergency services if the texter is at imminent risk of harm or is unable to develop a safety plan for themselves. It’s always a good idea to have a plan in place before reaching out to someone in crisis.
Crisis Text Line and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline also offer help through Facebook Messenger. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the Crisis Text Line are the only two organizations in this category that offer a Facebook chat option. However, each has their own policies regarding communication. For instance, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is different from Crisis Text Line in that they do not allow users to post posts about suicide or other potentially dangerous topics. However, both services offer a Facebook chat option for those who don’t have access to a phone.
As part of SUNY’s response to this crisis, SUNY’s counseling centers remain open throughout the school and online. They have also made sure that all 64 campuses will be provided with marketing materials to promote Crisis Text Line and QPR. The SUNY’s new mental health resource page includes the Crisis Text Line. The text line is intended to provide help for emotional and mental challenges, such as stress, suicidal thoughts, or substance abuse. The text service can also be used for relationship issues and domestic violence.
